Advantages & Disadvantages of Yahoo! Messenger

Yahoo! developers redesigned their instant messaging (IM) program in 2010 with a host of new features, including video chat and conferencing, social media integration and PC to telephone calls -- also known as VoIP calls. The program still lacks solid email support, however, and cannot connect with other IM clients such as AOL instant messenger (AIM).
Video Conferencing
Yahoo! Messenger includes live video chat and conferencing. The new software allows you to video conference with up to three other people for free. This can prove a huge cost savings, since other chat programs -- like Skype -- charge fees for multi-person conference calls. Yahoo! Messenger also places no limit on the time you can spend using the video conferencing feature.
Social Connectivity and Mobile Support
You can sign in to Yahoo! Messenger via your Facebook account and chat with friends from your list. In addition, Yahoo! Messenger enables you to update your status on both Facebook and Twitter. Android, BlackBerry and iPhone owners can also download and utilize the free Yahoo! Messenger mobile application.
Lack of Support for Other IM Clients
Yahoo! Messenger cannot integrate with similar services such as AIM or Windows Live Messenger. This can hamper the usefulness of the program, since you may have friends who utilize a different IM network. As of August 2011, Yahoo! has offered no solution for this type of problem.
Lack of Email Support
Although Yahoo! Messenger includes several video tutorials and an online help database, the service still provides no email support. Although you can solve many issues on your own, no consistent means exists of resolving any serious problems you encounter. Other IM clients include email tech support as part of the package.
